NOTES, CAUTIONS, AND WARNINGS
ƒ As you read through the procedures, you will come across NOTES, CAUTIONS, and WARNINGS. Each
one is there for a specific purpose. NOTES give you added information that will help you to complete a
particular procedure. CAUTIONS are given to prevent you from making an error that could damage the
vehicle. WARNINGS remind you to be especially careful in those areas where carelessness can cause
personal injury. The following list contains some general WARNING that you should follow when you work
on a vehicle.
ƒ Always wear safety glasses for eye protection.
ƒ Use safety stands whenever a procedure requires you to be under the vehicle with the vehicle jacked up.
ƒ Be sure that the ignition switch is always in the OFF position, unless otherwise required by the procedure.
ƒ Set the parking brake when working on the vehicle. It should be in REVERSE (engine OFF) or NEUTRAL
(engine ON) unless instructed otherwise for a specific operation. Place wood blocks (4”X4” or larger) to the
front and rear surfaces of the tires to provide further restraint from inadvertent vehicle movement.
ƒ Operate the engine only in a well-ventilated area to avoid the danger of carbon monoxide.
ƒ Keep yourself and your clothing away from the moving parts, when the engine is running, especially the fan
and drive belts.
ƒ To prevent serious burns, avoid contact with hot metal parts such as the radiator, exhaust manifold tail pipe,
catalytic converter and muffler.
ƒ Do not smoke while working on the vehicle.
ƒ To avoid injury, always remove rings, watches, loose hanging jewelry, and loose clothing before beginning
to work on a vehicle. Tie long hair securely behind the head.
ƒ Keep hands and other objects clear of the radiator fan blades, Electric cooling fans can start to operate at any
time by an increase in under hood temperatures, even though the ignition is in the OFF position. Therefore,
care should be taken to ensure that the electric cooling fan is completely disconnected when working under
the hood.
ƒ Disconnect the negative battery ground cable before using any electric welding equipment.

1-2. PURPOSE. This manual contains
maintenance, service and parts information for the
T5 Five-Speed Manual Transmission manufactured
by TREMEC (TRANSMISIONES Y EQUIPOS
MECANICOS S.A DE C.V.) Av. 5 de febrero No.
2115, Querétaro,Qro. México.
1-3. SCOPE. As you will see in the Table of
Contents, this manual provides information for
maintenance, troubleshooting, disassembly,
cleaning, inspection, repair or replacement, and
assembly of the transmission.
1-4. T5 TRANSMISSION CLASSES. Two
basic T5 transmission classes are covered in this
manual: WC (world class) and STD (standard).
Separate disassembly (Section 3 and 4) and
assembly (Sections 6 and 7) instructions are
provided for each of these classes. In other section
of the manual, variations within the classes are
noted in the instructions and illustrations.
NOTE
The parts shown in the illustrations in the service
instructions are typical for those used in a particular
class of transmission (WC or STD). Some parts may
be encountered in service that are different in
appearance than those illustrated. These “different”
parts perform the same function as those illustrated.
1-5. T5 TRANSMISSION CLASS
IDENTIFICATION. The T5 transmission can be
identified as WC or STD by the last three digits of
the transmission part number (see Table 3-1 or 4-1
in the disassembly sections). In this manual, figure
titles, lists, tables and main paragraph headings are
in the proper section for the transmission being
serviced.

AX-15 transmission from a Jeep Cherokee 4.0 6 cyl (1993-1999)
Bell housing for AX-15 (NV3550 is the same)
Manual transmission clutch housing spacer
Clutch kit (pilot bearing, clutch disk, pressure plate, throw out bearing)
4.0 flywheel and all bolts
Hydraulics - Master/Slave cylinder assembly from the same year as the trans you are swapping in
Clutch/brake pedals assembly from the year of your vehicle, or as close as possible
PCM from a Jeep with a manual trans from a year compatible with yours (yes, you need it to pass inspection!)
Shifter boots (one screws into trans tunnel, one cosmetic cover over center console)
Transmission tunnel plate adapter for manual trans (has cut-out for shifter to come through)
All transmission mount hardware and brackets
Transfer case shift linkage and underside brackets from transmission and body
Front and rear drive shafts from a manual with the same rear as you have
NOTES: This may be obvious to many people, but manual XJs with the 4.0 came from the factory with 3.07
gearing, whereas automatics came with either 3.55 or (rarely) 3.73. I love the 3.55 ratio with the manual for up
to 31” tires, but if you do not plan to run at least slightly oversized (at least 235/75R15 ~28”) tires, this is
something to consider. If you are already lifted/re-geared with oversized tires, make sure you check a tire size
to gear ratio chart and read up on what size tires and gears you should run with the manual transmission.
Also, get a good manual, such as Chilton’s or Haynes manuals from your year of Jeep as well as the year of the
Jeep you are using the majority of your parts from. Many of the torque specs you will need are extremely
important for this swap, so be sure to double check all torque specifications when installing all transmission and
clutch parts.

Chrysler kept the New Venture name for the New Process plant but no longer builds any of the previous models. Subsequently, Chrysler sold the New Venture/New Process Division to Magna International, a major tier-one OEM supplier. This partnership sucked $80 million to $100 million of profit out of New Process Gear when it was owned by Chrysler and produced a great number of transmissions for which no OEM replacement parts are available. When you have to re- build one of the units you now have to rely on aftermarket parts. Many of these parts are well made and will give good service, but most of these Getrag-based de- signs have noise issues that cannot be resolved. If you are working on one of these units discuss these is- sues with the customer so you don’t wind up taking responsibili- ty for something you did not cre- ate. TD

f you enjoy the thrill of exploring the
open road in your motorhome, you’ve prob-
ably found a few instances where bigger
is not always better. That’s where towing a
dinghy behind your coach becomes advanta-
geous. Want to know more? The 2013 Guide
to Dinghy Towing provides a selection of in-
formative articles and a listing of new vehicles
ready-made to enhance your RVing lifestyle.
Granted, no manufacturer has yet to engi-
neer a plug-and-play setup directly from the
factory, but it’s never been simpler to equip
both dinghy and motorhome for road duty.
For starters, as highlighted in “Things to
Know Before You Tow” (page 6), the hard
hookup between motorhome and dinghy has
become an easy one-person operation: self-
aligning tow bars make cinching up a breeze;
with some tow-bar designs, even routing
cables and wiring through hollow arms, the
connection is more than easy, it’s eye-pleas-
ing. Plus, manufacturers are offering an array
of accessories to help keep it that way: An
RV underskirt, fi tted beneath the equipment,
will safeguard the dinghy vehicle and tow-
ing hardware from debris. For more ironclad
protection, nearly indestructible rock guards
are available that quickly attach to the tow bar
and shield the dinghy from road debris.
Yet another device to aid in safe dinghy
transport, supplemental braking systems have
likewise evolved. Portable systems can be
installed in just minutes, and permanent instal-
lations remain unobtrusive. Dinghy brakes may
not be mandatory in some states but any time
you add a few tons of weight to the back of
your motorhome, you need a way to slow it
down without taxing the brakes on your coach.
And make no mistake, contemporary
motor homes can accommodate a lot of din-
ghy weight. While many new chassis are rated
to handle at least 4,000 pounds of dinghy
weight, certain luxury coaches today carry
gross combined weight ratings (GCWR) of
60,000 pounds or more — with up to 25 per-
cent of that dedicated to towing.
The focus of our annual dinghy towing
guide is the dinghies themselves. Manufactur-
ers are becoming increasingly sensitive to the
needs of the motorhome community, and the
“2013 Dinghy Roundup” (beginning on page
12) lists vehicles that have been manufacturer-
certifi ed for four-wheels-down towing. The
list includes many of the newest vehicles — in-
cluding nine hybrids. For all-terrain fun, there
are plenty of 4WD vehicles to choose from.
While some vehicles are easy to tow, others re-
quire that very specifi c procedures be followed
before and during towing to prevent damage.
This year we’ve included expanded informa-
tion on the manufacturer guidelines required
for fl at towing, though you’ll still need to
check the owner’s manual for more detailed
procedures.
As motorhomes continue to grow in size
and stature, life on the road has never been
more comfortable. A dinghy adds to that
enjoyment. J

1 General information
All vehicles covered in this manual come
equipped with either a four or five-speed
manual transmission or an automatic trans-
mission. All information on the manual trans-
mission is included in this Part of Chapter 7.
Information on the automatic transmission
can be found in Part B of this Chapter.
Both four and five-speed manual trans-
missions are used in these models. On five-
speed transmissions, the 5th gear is an over-
drive.
Due to the complexity, unavailability of
replacement parts and the special tools nec-
essary. internal repair by the home mechanic
is not recommended. The information in this
Chapter is limited to general information and
removal and installation of the transmission.

may be a good idea to replace the unit with
either a new or rebuilt one. Your local dealer
or transmission shop should be able to sup-
ply you with information concerning cost,
availability and exchange policy. Regardless
of how you decide to remedy a transmission
problem, you can still save a lot of money by
removing and installing the unit yourself.
2 Oil seal replacement
Refer to illustrations 2.6, 2.11, 21.13a
and 2.13b
1 Oil leaks frequently occur due to wear of
the extension housing oil seal and/or the
speedometer drive gear oil seal and O-ring.
Replacement of these seals is relatively easy,
since the repairs can usually be performed
without removing the transmission or transfer
case (4WD models) from the vehicle.
2 The extension housing oil seal is located
at the extreme rear of the transmission or
transfer case, where the driveshaft is
attached. If leakage at the seal is suspected,
raise the vehicle and support it securely on
jackstands. If the seal is leaking, transmission
lubricant will be built up on the front of the
driveshaft and may be dripping from the rear
of the transmission or transfer case.
3 Refer to Chapter 8 and remove the
driveshaft.
4 Using a soft-faced hammer, carefully
tap the dust shield (if equipped) to the rear
and remove it from the transmission. Be
careful not to distort it.
5 Using a screwdriver or pry bar, carefully
pry the oil seal out of the rear of the transmis-
sion or transfer case. Do not damage the
splines on the transmission output shaft.
6 If the oil seal cannot be removed with a
screwdriver or pry bar, a special oil seal
removal tool (available at auto parts stores)

Factory Transmissions 45RFE: The 45RFE four speed automatic transmission was used in 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokees with 4.7L engines. 46RE: The 46RE four speed automatic transmission was used in 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokees with 5.9L engines. 44RE: The 44RE four speed automatic transmission was used in 1996 to 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokee's with 5.2L engines. 42RE: The 42RE four speed automatic transmission was used in 1993.3 to 1998 Jeep Grand Cherokees with 4.0L engines. 46RH: The 46RH four speed automatic transmission was used in 1993 to 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokees with 5.2L engines. 32RH: The 32RH three speed automatic transmission was used in 1992 to 1995 Wrangler with 4.0L engine and it continues to be used in 1997+ Wrangler with 4.0L engine. 30RH: The 30RH three speed automatic transmission was used in 1992 to 1995 Wrangler & 1992 to 1996 Cherokee with 2.5L engine. AW4: The AW4 four speed automatic transmission was used in 1987 to 1990 Jeep Cherokee (XJ), & Jeep Comanche with 2.5L & 4.0L engines. The AW4 was also used in 1987 through 1992 Jeep Comanche & 1991 through 1998 Jeep Cherokee & 1993 through 1993.5 Jeep Grand Cherokee with 4.0L engines. AX-15: The AX-15 is a medium duty 5 speed manual transmission. It was introduced in mid 1989 in YJs with the 4.2L engine and XJs and MJs with this engine. The first year of the Grand Cherokee (ZJ), the AX-15 was rare option only with the 4.0L engine. The AX-15 is still used in TJs and XJs with the 4.0L engine. AX-5: The AX-5 (and AX-4, the non-overdrive version) is a light duty 5 speed manual transmission. It was used in all Wranglers from 1987 equipped with the 2.5L I4 engine. It

T-150, T-15A, and T-18A. Models T-l50 and T-15A are
3-speed, constant mesh units which provide
synchromesh engagement in all three forward gears.
Model T-18A is a 4-speed, constant mesh unit which

6-2 MANUAL TBANSMISSIUN Model T-150 is used in CJ models with six-cylinder or V-8 engines. Model is used in Cherokee, and Truck models with six-cylinder or V-8 engines. Model is used in all models and with six-cylinder or V-8 engines. IDENTIFICATION An identification tag which displays the vendor and Jeep part number is attached to the transmission shift control housing. The information on this tag is neces- sary to obtain the correct components should replace- ment be necessary. NOTE: During transmission assembly, be sure to attach the identification tag to the transmission in the original location. TMNSMISSIUN REMOVAL-ALL MODELS (1) Remove shift lever knob, trim ring, and boot. (2) Remove floor covering and transmission access cover from floorpan. (3) On Cherokee and Truck models with T-15A 3-speed transmission, remove shift control lever hous- ing assembly (fig. 6-1). (4) On all models with T-18A 4-speed or CJ models with T-150 3-speed, remove shift control housing cap, spring retainer, spring, shift lever, and pin (fig. 6-2). (5) On models with T-18A 4-speed, remove transfer case shift lever. (6) Raise vehicle. (7) Index mark propeller shafts before removal for proper alignment at installation. (8) Remove front propeller shaft and disconnect rear propeller shaft from transfer case. (9) Disconnect speedometer cable, backup lamp switch wires, transmission controlled spark (TCS) advance (if equipped) and parking brake cable (if con- nected to crossmember). nuts securing exhaust pipes to manifolds and lower catalytic converter (if equipped) and exhaust pipes.

This Twentieth edition of the Advance Adapters Jeep Conversion Guide is an accumulation of our experiences and

EMISSIONS STATEMENT
Federal law requires emissions parts on new vehicles to be warranted for at least two years or 24,000 miles,
whichever comes first. Federal and many state laws also prohibit the removal, modification or rendering inop-
erative any part that affects emissions or safety on motor vehicles used on public streets or highways. Many
Mopar Performance parts are designated for track use or off-road use only. Installation of certain components
may bring the vehicle out of compliance with safety and/or emissions standards. Mopar recommends that
vehicles with parts designated in this fashion not be operated on public roads. Mopar Performance customers
are responsible for complying with applicable state and local environmental regulations. Additionally, certain
performance parts may affect the emissions characteristics of the vehicle. If you install them on the vehicle,
and your vehicle consequently fails a required state or local I/M (inspection and maintenance) emissions
test, including any test required to maintain or renew your vehicle’s registration, or if your vehicle is subject
to an emissions recall, Chrysler Group LLC may not be required to repair your vehicle under the emissions
performance warranty, and you may be required to remove those parts at your own expense in order to obtain
repairs necessary to pass the I/M test or to perform the recall.
NOTE — CALIFORNIA ONLY
The emissions laws and regulations of the state of California apply to all non-racing vehicles operated in
California. Consequently, those parts marked in this catalog with a “1” and appropriately marked on their
packaging may legally be used in California only on a racing vehicle that will never be operated on public
roads.
